The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society Holiday Cards @ The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society
Oct 1 – Dec 25 all-day
The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society Holiday Cards @ The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society | Pittsburgh | Pennsylvania | United States

Help find a cure for blood cancer while showing your friends, family, and associates how important they are. Give a gift in their honor this holiday season by purchasing your holiday cards through The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.

The 2017 holiday card entitled “Mt. Washington Overlook,” is an original watercolor designed by Pittsburgh artist, Mary Lois Verrilla. Most often referred to as “The Lady Who Paints Pittsburgh,” Verrilla is a Pittsburgh treasure known across the country for her unique works.

This stunning painting features a winter scene of the Grandview Avenue overlook on Mt. Washington. With a breathtaking view of downtown, including PPG Place, Fifth Avenue Place and the Fort Duquesne Bridge, this work of art captures the unique beauty of the city as sightseers gather at the scenic viewpoint to take in the Pittsburgh skyline and all of its wonder

All of these cards have been created exclusively for The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. They can be ordered with a greeting inside or blank, and can even be personalized for you or your business for an additional fee. This year’s message reads, “May the beauty of the season continue to inspire wonder and joy now and throughout the New Year.”

For nearly 70 years, The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society has passionately led the fight against blood cancer in significant ways: funding groundbreaking research, advocating for important public health policies and providing patient services and programs. Your support is truly appreciated and will help in our research efforts.

A Timeless Perfection: American Figurative Sculpture in the Classical Spirit – Gifts from Dr. Michael L. Nieland @ Westmoreland Museum of American Art
Oct 7 – Dec 31 all-day
A Timeless Perfection: American Figurative Sculpture in the Classical Spirit - Gifts from Dr. Michael L. Nieland @ Westmoreland Museum of American Art | Greensburg | Pennsylvania | United States

An extraordinary new generation of academically trained American sculptors emerged during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. At the height of the Gilded Age, they achieved widespread critical and commercial success for works created on public commission as well as for private patrons. Working on both grand civic platforms and on a more intimate, domestic scale, they transformed the art of American sculpture.

Broadway’s Xanadu
Dec 5 2017 @ 7:50 pm – Jan 7 2018 @ 8:50 pm

RELIVE THE ‘80s WITH “A RETRO FEEL-GOOD NIGHT OF NOSTALGIA!”
From the golden age of romantic comedies, legwarmers and Pac-Man…XANADU is a classic tale of boy meets girl – except that girl is actually Greek muse “Kira” sent from the heavens to Venice Beach, California to help struggling artist, Sonny, achieve his greatest dream – to open the first ROLLER DISCO! When Kira falls into forbidden love with this mortal, her jealous sisters take advantage of the situation, and chaos [and hilarity] abound. This hysterical ‘80s musical adventure “rolls” along to a legendary hit score featuring “Magic,” “All Over The World,” “Suddenly,” “I’m Alive,” “Evil Woman,” “Have You Never Been Mellow” and “Xanadu,” to name a few.

Writing Outside the Lines: Experimental Forms and Process in Creative Nonfiction @ Creative Nonfiction Foundation
Jan 11 @ 6:30 pm – 8:30 pm
Writing Outside the Lines: Experimental Forms and Process in Creative Nonfiction @ Creative Nonfiction Foundation | Pittsburgh | Pennsylvania | United States

There are many ways to tell stories that are true.

In this lively five-workshop series, examples and writing prompts will help writers practice innovative ways of breaking through traditional essay structure and thinking about how form can complement content in creative nonfiction.

Activities and prompts include writing a short food memoir in the form of a recipe card, a flash nonfiction piece about a transformative moment that leaps in time, a six-word memoir, an encyclopedia entry, and a sensory map. Participants and peers will examine how the fine art of perhaps-ing, or the speculative, can broaden the reach of storytelling. Between sessions, writers will revise their work to share with the instructor and their peers at the next meeting, and for the final workshop, they will choose one piece to revise for possible publication. Writers will also learn more about magazines that publish experimental and traditional forms.
