A Timeless Perfection: American Figurative Sculpture in the Classical Spirit – Gifts from Dr. Michael L. Nieland @ Westmoreland Museum of American Art
Oct 7 – Dec 31 all-day
A Timeless Perfection: American Figurative Sculpture in the Classical Spirit - Gifts from Dr. Michael L. Nieland @ Westmoreland Museum of American Art | Greensburg | Pennsylvania | United States

An extraordinary new generation of academically trained American sculptors emerged during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. At the height of the Gilded Age, they achieved widespread critical and commercial success for works created on public commission as well as for private patrons. Working on both grand civic platforms and on a more intimate, domestic scale, they transformed the art of American sculpture.

What is Krampusnacht?

The Feast of St. Nicholas is celebrated in parts of Europe on 6 December. On the preceding evening of December 5, Krampus Night or Krampusnacht, the Krampus appears on the streets. Sometimes accompanying St. Nicholas and sometimes on his own, Krampus visits homes and businesses. The Saint usually appears in the Eastern Rite vestments of a bishop, and he carries a golden ceremonial staff. Unlike North American versions of Santa Claus, in these celebrations Saint Nicholas concerns himself only with the good children, while Krampus is responsible for the bad. Nicholas dispenses gifts, while Krampus supplies coal and the ruten bundles.
In German-speaking Alpine folklore, Krampus is a horned, anthropomorphic figure. According to traditional narratives around the figure, Krampus punishes children during the Christmas season who have misbehaved, in contrast with Saint Nicholas, who rewards well-behaved ones with gifts.

Writing Outside the Lines: Experimental Forms and Process in Creative Nonfiction @ Creative Nonfiction Foundation
Jan 11 @ 6:30 pm – 8:30 pm
Writing Outside the Lines: Experimental Forms and Process in Creative Nonfiction @ Creative Nonfiction Foundation | Pittsburgh | Pennsylvania | United States

There are many ways to tell stories that are true.

In this lively five-workshop series, examples and writing prompts will help writers practice innovative ways of breaking through traditional essay structure and thinking about how form can complement content in creative nonfiction.

Activities and prompts include writing a short food memoir in the form of a recipe card, a flash nonfiction piece about a transformative moment that leaps in time, a six-word memoir, an encyclopedia entry, and a sensory map. Participants and peers will examine how the fine art of perhaps-ing, or the speculative, can broaden the reach of storytelling. Between sessions, writers will revise their work to share with the instructor and their peers at the next meeting, and for the final workshop, they will choose one piece to revise for possible publication. Writers will also learn more about magazines that publish experimental and traditional forms.
